Trauma from violence affects more than the person. It affects families, work, school and the community. HOPE Coalition helps families in crisis restore their hope and rebuild their lives. HOPE provides services for victims of domestic violence, abused children, victims of sexual violence, homelessness and lack of basic needs. HOPE’s service area includes Goodhue and Wabasha Counties in Minnesota and parts of Western Pierce County in Wisconsin.

Kate and her son came to the Haven of Hope Shelter when her husband was arrested. She had been in an abusive relationship and knew she needed to get herself stabilized. Kate is a “go-getter.” She found herself a job and a place to live. Once on her own, the isolation set in. She realized the human price one pays from living in a domestic violence relationship. Before long, Kate called the shelter again and asked if she could come back? She felt lost and alone.

When Kate returned to HOPE’s shelter, she received emotional support from Advocates, help with getting an Order for Protection and eventually a divorce. She received help getting financial reparations so she could begin seeing a counselor. She learned about the power and control dynamics of domestic violence, financial abuse, and manipulation. She received help improving her credit score.

"I feel ready now". Kate found herself another job. HOPE helped get her a new apartment and set it up as a home. Kate is now enrolled in classes to become a paralegal.
